ODE TO THE MANGROVE

BY

ALDWIN ALBINO

It borders the land and borders the sea,
Living organisms among it feel free.
The Magnificent mangrove or “Mang” as we call it,
Forever enhancing all that surrounds it.
When a dark cloud releases its content quite heavily,
Moistening the earth and filling the mang’s pools thoroughly,
Tadpoles, Cascadura, Guabins, and other small fish, are happy, that they live
in a place that abounds with plenty.
Many more creatures seek out this place,
All seem to go there willingly, and always in haste.
Why do they treasure this solitude as home?
A difficult question, best left alone.
The birds and the bees are all happy here too,
They frequent the area as most of us do.
On a windy sunny day, when a boy flies a kite,
Cohabitants of the region are all filled with delight.
If flora and fauna are flourishing there,
Maybe Nature’s sending a message for us to adhere.
The music there, the love there, a fun place to hang,
This treasure in Laventille I cherish called the mang.
My heart pounds with excitement whenever I remember,
My first music lesson there at an age so tender,
Find solace there; befriend a tree or a bee,
In that region called the Mang in Success Village, Laventille.
